July Swoon

5 games, 6 days, 9 runs scored, 1 win. In a word; disgusting. This is the Chicago White Sox in July. This is a team that is supposed to contend for a World Series, or at least that's what we've been told by GM Kenny Williams.

A World Series team hits in the clutch. A World Series team creates runs. A World Series team this is not.

Here's a table of the sluggish White Sox offense. In short, the offense has been offensive.

NAME AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBIBB SO SB CS BA OBP SLG OPS

Carlos Lee 19 3 5 2 0 2 13 3 0 4 0 0 .263 .263 .684 .947
Paul Konerko 18 1 6 1 0 1 10 1 1 2 0 0 .333 .368 .556 .924
Joe Crede 15 0 1 0 0 0 0 1 0 1 0 0 .067 .067 .000 .067
Jose Valentin 14 1 2 0 0 0 2 1 1 8 1 0 .143 .200 .143 .343
Timo Perez 13 1 2 0 0 0 2 1 4 1 1 0 .154 .353 .154 .507
Willie Harris 11 1 1 0 0 0 1 0 1 4 0 0 .091 .167 .091 .258
Aaron Rowand 10 0 3 0 0 0 3 0 0 3 1 0 .300 .300 .300 .600
Frank Thomas 9 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 5 0 0 .000 .182 .000 .182
Juan Uribe 9 1 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 3 0 0 .000 .100 .000 .100
Jamie Burke 8 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 1 2 0 0 .125 .222 .125 .347
Ross Gload 8 0 1 1 0 0 2 2 0 1 0 0 .125 .125 .250 .375
S. Alomar Jr. 2 0 1 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 .500 .500 .500 1.00
Ben Davis 4 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 2 0 0 .000 .000 .000 .000
Pitcher 5 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 3 0 0 .000 .000 .000 .000
145 9 23 4 0 3 35 9 11 39 3 0 .159 .218 .241 .459

The Sox have batted a woeful .159 in July. They have not scored more than 2 runs in any game. They have 7 extra-base hits. If you subtract Carlos Lee and Paul Konerko, they've only had 1 extra-base hit, by Ross Gload, who looked terrible at the plate tonight.

I know 3 of the games in July have been played in a National League park, but if you replace the 0-for-5 the pitchers have combined for, with a 5-for-5 with 5HR stretch, which is a pipe dream, the overall average raises to just .193, and the SLG to just .379.

The team is slumping. Bad. Frank Thomas struck out 4 times in a row, including 3 times in 3AB's in the Cubs series. I don't think he even did that in his 'down' years.

I don't know what it's going to take, but this team needs a swift kick in the ass right now.
