Kenny Williams has been saved from himself this offseason. First it was Vizquel
going to San Francisco for 3 years/$12.25M. Then today, Christian Guzman
was snatched up by new Nationals GM Jim Bowden, of worst show on TV
fame, for 4 years/$16.8M, along with Vinny Castilla
The market appears to have been set, and unlike the last couple seasons, it seems that GMs are once again opening up their pocketbooks. Here's a chart showing approximately how much they are paying for Wins Above Replacement.
Player avgWARP $/year $/WARP
Vizquel 4.30 4.08 $0.95M
Guzman 2.83 4.20 $1.48M
Castilla 2.60 3.10 $1.19M
AVG 3.24 3.91 $1.21M
Polanco 6.13 ???? ?????
I averaged the last three seasons from each player to determine avgWARP. On average, GM's are paying $1.21M for a win above a replacement player. Using this admittedly tiny sample size, Placido Polanco
would figure to earn about $7.4M at free agency. I don't think he'll get that much, but the point is that he's a much better value than the others.
